Background:
Sweet corn is a highly remunerative cash crop for the farmers. Owing to short duration, the crop can be grown almost round the year and yields, besides green cobs, green fodder as well, thereby doubly benefiting the farmers. It can be marketed in fresh, frozen and canned forms. In sweet corn only limited number of public bred hybrids is available and the private sector sweet corn hybrids are priced very high. VL Sweet Corn Hybrid 2, therefore, was developed with the objective of making a high yielding sweet corn cultivar available to the farmers of the country at affordable price. Technology Details:
VL Sweet Corn Hybrid 2 is a high yielding single-cross sweet corn hybrid. It exhibited an average yield of 10,347 kg/ha in Zone I (Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura), exhibiting yield superiority of 41.6 per cent over the check Madhuri (7,309 kg/ha) in All India Coordinated Trials during 2015-17. The harvestable maturity (green cob) of the hybrid is 75-77 days in mid-hills. It is moderately resistant to turcicum and maydis leaf blight, banded leaf & sheath blight and curvularia leaf spot. TSS of the corn is 14.5-15.3%. VL Sweet Corn Hybrid 2 was notified for vide S.O. 1498(E) dated 05.07.19 for the UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand (Hills) and Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura (North Eastern Hills Region).
